If you’re reading this post, you probably already know that your garage door needs a bit of an update. You’re probably also wondering if you can get away with DIY-ing this project instead of calling in the professionals.
Do you have the skills you need? How long will it take from start to finish? How much will it cost you out of pocket?
Don’t worry – most people have all of the same questions when they tackle this or any other home improvement project on their own. Of course, each paint job is slightly different and has its own parameters, but for the most part, the little face lifts your home needs here and there are relatively doable on your own.
In this blog post, we’ll walk you through how to paint your garage door easily, quickly, and for a relatively cheap price.
Let’s dive into it!
First thing’s first – it’s important to determine whether this is just a touch-up or a full upgrade. If the color is staying the same but just needs a fresh coat, you’ll have to do less work upfront determining what swatch you want to use, if it goes with the rest of your design or your neighborhood as a whole, what its finish is, how much it costs, and more.
Now, for the nitty gritty. We’ll start with supplies, which we’ve linked below so you can easily find more information on the things we recommend using.
Supplies:
Painter’s Tape
Painter’s Rags
Canvas Dropcloth
Sanding Sponge
Paint Brush Set
Paint Roller Cover
Paint Roller Frame
Plastic Roller Tray
Paint Sticks
Paint Thinner
Step Ladder
After that, you’ll just need a gallon or two of the paint color of your choice. In total, the project cost should come to between $75-$100 for everything. Paints, supplies, cleaning products, the whole thing. Not too shabby!
For the actual process, we recommend following these steps:
1. Gently sand or wipe down garage door(s).
2. Tape around the trim.
3. Prep your area and secure your dropcloth.
4. Paint!
(Note: We always recommend starting with the trim, then move to the top, sides, bottom and perimeter.)
And just like that, you’re done!
