Murals are a great way to add some lightheartedness to your child’s bedroom or play area – and if you’re like us you’ve been seeing them all over TikTok.
If you want to DIY one of these in your own home, the first step to success is making sure you’ve got all the materials you’ll need before you get started. We understand that everyone’s wallets are a little thinner lately, but it’s important to not skimp when it comes to your supplies. Cheap brushes and rollers leave behind streaks and fibers once the paint dries, meaning more time and money wasted to fix the mistakes later.
Once you’ve got your painter’s tape, tarp, brushes and paints ready to go, it’s time to make sure your canvas is ready! Just use a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or dust has gathered, and you should be good to go.
It’s tempting to just start throwing paint at the wall, but it’s important to have a plan in place before that first brushstroke. We recommend using a grid system to sketch out what you are envisioning. It makes transferring your design onto your walls significantly easier.
Now that you feel confident that you know what direction you’re going in, you can apply painter’s tape to the edges of the design.
A question we run into a lot here is about what type of paint to use for a project like this.If your design involves large blocks of solid color, using acrylic paint might be a little pricier than you’d like. Regular household paint should work fine here, and if you decide to get a little bit more detail-oriented, you can round out your finished product with some final touches in acrylic to add depth.
Once you actually start painting, it’s important to take things slowly. Take a break, admire your work, and make sure that you are working inside the lines of your grid. Projects like these take a while to “come together”, meaning that you might not see your vision coming to life at first – and that’s okay!
If you need professional painting done or require consultation about any DIY project you might have on your spring to-do list, we’re always happy to help here at Ireland’s Finest.
